Introduction to Golf – The Basics
A putter is a special golf club that you use when you’re really close to the hole, like when you’re on the green (the super short grass). It’s not for hitting the ball really far like a driver or a wood. It’s for rolling the ball smoothly along the ground so it goes into the hole.
Think of it like this:
- A driver is like a cricket bat—it’s for big, long hits.
- A putter is like a hockey stick—it’s for soft, gentle hits to get the ball into the goal (or in this case, the hole)!
A chipping club is one you use when you’re kind of close to the green, but not on it yet. Your ball is maybe sitting in the grass, and you need to hit it gently to get it up in the air a little bit, then let it land softly and roll toward the hole.
The club you’d use for this is usually a wedge—like a pitching wedge or a sand wedge.
Think of it like a shovel that helps you scoop the ball up and pop it toward the hole! You don’t swing super hard—just a small, smooth swing.
A practice putting green is like a mini golf course just for practicing putting.
It’s a small patch of grass that’s really smooth, so you can practice using your putter—that’s the club you use to roll the ball along the ground into the hole.
You use it to get better at putting, so when you play a real game, you can sink those shots from close up!
It’s kind of like a basketball hoop for practicing free throws—but for golf! You get to practice your aim, your touch, and how hard you hit the ball.
A chipping green is a special place at the golf course where you practice chipping.
It looks like a little practice green, but instead of using your putter, you use a wedge to hit the ball up into the air so it lands softly on the green and rolls toward the hole.
Think of it like a small field where you practice hitting little “pop-up” shots—kind of like a mini football field where you practice kicking the ball just the right way to get it close to the goal.
So the chipping green is where you practice those little short, high shots that help you get the ball close to the hole when you’re not on the green yet.
